# Personal Events

Personal events are one-off or scheduled items you add to the personal timeline — a bonus, an expense, a capital gain, a new loan. Each event appears as an icon on the timeline at the month it occurs and adjusts how the simulation projects cashflows, tax, and savings from that point forward.

For ongoing baseline values like salary and living expenses, see [Personal Assumptions](/scaleconnect-docs/simulator/assumptions-and-events/personal-assumptions.md).

***

## How Personal Events Affect Cashflows

Every event feeds into the personal cashflow at the month it occurs:

* **Income events** (bonus, capital gain proceeds) increase available cash in that month.
* **Expense events** (one-off expense, loan repayments) reduce available cash.
* **Loan events** (personal loan, car loan) create ongoing repayment obligations that flow through subsequent months.
* **Tax events** (capital gains, offset account changes) affect the tax calculation for that financial year.

These personal cashflows connect to the broader simulation:

* **Property cashflows** — tax deductions from investment properties interact with personal income. A large bonus in the same year as a property loss changes the net tax position.
* **Portfolio cashflows** — the combined view across all properties and personal income, showing the full trajectory of the strategy.

When you add or change a personal event, all three layers recalculate from that point forward.

{% hint style="info" %}
For complex tax scenarios — how capital gains tax applies to non-property assets, how offset accounts reduce interest and affect deductibility — ask ScaleAI via **Broker Brain** or the **client assistant** in ScaleApp.
{% endhint %}

## Adding a Personal Event

1. Open a client's strategy and switch to the **Personal** view (click the person card in the strategy view).
2. Scroll to the month where you want the event to occur.
3. Click the **+** button at the top of the timeline, or click the purple personal bar directly.
4. A sidebar opens with six event types in a grid. Select one.
5. Fill in the form and click **Add**.

![Add Personal Event sidebar showing the six event types](https://1103942972-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIVoALSAigc466POg2rP1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-346cf373e89b3c5dd16b821caa168da327035cf5%2FPersonal_Events_Modal.png?alt=media)

## Editing an Event

Click any event icon on the personal bar. If multiple events share the same month, an event details list appears — select the one you want to edit. The form opens pre-filled with existing values.

## Deleting an Event

Inside any event's edit form, click **Undo** at the bottom. A confirmation dialog appears — deletions are permanent and cannot be reversed.

## Event Types

Six event types are available from the Add Personal Event sidebar.

### Bonus / Commission

A one-off income payment at the selected date — an annual bonus, a commission cheque, a lump sum payment. The amount appears as income in the personal cashflow for that month.

Enter the dollar amount and the date. The event is recorded as a single payment — it doesn't recur.

![Bonus / Commission form](https://1103942972-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIVoALSAigc466POg2rP1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-182de72b596ff58b110526258d744191a8bccfd7%2Fbonus_commission.png?alt=media)

{% hint style="info" %}
For ongoing bonus or commission payments, use the [Recurring Bonuses](/scaleconnect-docs/simulator/assumptions-and-events/personal-assumptions.md#recurring-bonuses) assumption instead.
{% endhint %}

***

### One-Off Expense

A single personal expense — a wedding, holiday, medical bill, or any non-recurring cost. Enter a name and the dollar amount. The expense reduces personal cashflow in the month it occurs.

Both fields are required. The amount must be greater than $0.

![One-Off Personal Expense form](https://1103942972-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIVoALSAigc466POg2rP1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-cfb161fbed3d8eb6119a232f17d763d21f668104%2FOne_Off_Personal_Expense.png?alt=media)

***

### Capital Gain / Loss

A realised capital gain or loss from selling a non-property asset — shares, crypto, a business, or other investments.

Two fields: **Cash Proceeds from Asset Sale** (the total sale amount, which flows into available cash) and **Capital Gain / Loss** (the gain or loss amount, which affects the tax calculation for that financial year). Select whether it's a **Gain** or a **Loss**.

![Capital Gain / Loss form](https://1103942972-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIVoALSAigc466POg2rP1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-09aaaa874a336fff9f78c94182fbdde4a6fbdef9%2FNon_Property_Capital_Gain.png?alt=media)

{% hint style="info" %}
This is for non-property assets only. Capital gains from selling a property are handled automatically by the [Sell](/scaleconnect-docs/simulator/assumptions-and-events/property-events-1.md#sell) event on the property timeline.
{% endhint %}

### Personal Loan

A fully modelled personal loan with amortisation — renovation finance, a holiday loan, or any non-property borrowing. The simulation builds the full repayment schedule from the details you enter: principal, interest, and remaining balance over time. Repayments appear as expenses in the personal cashflow.

Choose **New** (starts from scratch) or **Existing** (already in progress). Set the start date, term in years, initial amount, interest rate, repayment amount, and frequency (monthly, fortnightly, or weekly).

The minimum term is 1 year. All fields are required.

***

### Car Loan

Same structure as a Personal Loan with one addition: an optional **Balloon Payment** — a lump sum due at the end of the term. If set, the simulation accounts for the residual balance due at maturity.

Everything else works the same way — lender, term, principal, rate, repayments, and frequency.

![Car Loan form](https://1103942972-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIVoALSAigc466POg2rP1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-9595c1a32311d11e5e6adb919bf5ff779278a248%2FCar_Loan.png?alt=media)

### Offset Loans

A voluntary repayment or offset account deposit against an existing property loan. This is a two-step form.

**Step 1** — Choose the type (**Voluntary Repayment** or **Offset Account**) and select which of the client's property loans to apply it to.

![Offset Loan — Step 1: choose type and loan](https://1103942972-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIVoALSAigc466POg2rP1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-756d15597cd8b20b1e8b54d3cd7e6c595368accb%2FOffset_Loan_Modal.png?alt=media)

**Step 2** — Enter the dollar amount. For offset accounts, choose **Deposit** (increases the offset balance, reducing interest charged) or **Withdraw** (decreases it).

![Offset Loan — Step 2: enter deposit amount](https://1103942972-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FIVoALSAigc466POg2rP1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-565c59d7a097ee59e24b4c68a45f8f73c852c9b9%2FOffset_Loan_Add.png?alt=media)

For voluntary repayments, the amount reduces the loan principal directly.

The form shows **Cash Available** to help size the repayment or deposit within the client's available funds at that date.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Offset deposits don't reduce the loan principal — they reduce the interest charged. Voluntary repayments reduce the principal permanently. Choose the right type based on the client's strategy.
{% endhint %}

<details>

<summary>Can I model a loan that already exists?</summary>

Yes. When adding a Personal Loan or Car Loan, select **Existing** instead of **New**. Enter the current balance and remaining terms — the simulation picks up from there.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What's the difference between the Personal Loans assumption and the Personal Loan event?</summary>

The [Personal Loans assumption](/scaleconnect-docs/simulator/assumptions-and-events/personal-assumptions.md#personal-loans) is a summary repayment figure — a flat monthly amount with no amortisation. The Personal Loan event models the full loan: principal, interest, term, and a calculated repayment schedule. Use the event when you need accuracy; use the assumption for a quick approximation.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I apply an offset deposit to any loan?</summary>

Only to property loans that exist in the client's strategy. The form shows a dropdown of available loans. If no property loans exist, you won't be able to add an offset event.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I undo a deleted event?</summary>

No. Deletions are permanent. If you accidentally delete an event, re-create it manually.

</details>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.scaleconnect.com.au/scaleconnect-docs/simulator/assumptions-and-events/personal-events-1.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
