# Compare Strategies

The comparison view overlays chart data from up to three strategies so you can see how they diverge across key metrics over time.

{% hint style="info" %}
To create an alternative strategy for comparison, clone the Base Case first. See [Cloning a Strategy](/scaleconnect-docs/simulator/strategies.md#cloning-a-strategy) for the full walkthrough.
{% endhint %}

## How to Compare Strategies

1. Open a client's strategy in the simulator.
2. Click the **compare icon** (two arrows) in the top toolbar.
3. A selector dialog opens with three strategy slots:
   * **Slot 1** is locked to the current strategy.
   * **Slots 2 and 3** are available for selection.
4. Search for a client or strategy name in the search bar.
5. Select one or two strategies to compare against.
6. Click **Compare**.

{% hint style="info" %}
You can compare strategies across different clients — not just different strategies for the same person. This is useful when comparing two clients with similar goals but different property portfolios.

## What the Comparison Shows

The comparison opens as a full-screen overlay with five charts, each plotting every selected strategy as a separate colour-coded line:

<table><thead><tr><th width="228.37109375">Chart</th><th>What it shows</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Portfolio Value</strong></td><td>Total property portfolio value over time</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Debt vs Equity</strong></td><td>Debt outstanding (solid line) and equity (dashed line) for each strategy</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Net Cash Flow</strong></td><td>Annual net cashflow from the investment portfolio</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Cumulative Cashflow Impact</strong></td><td>Running total of personal-plus-portfolio cashflows</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Cumulative Wealth Impact</strong></td><td>Long-term wealth position accounting for property growth, debt reduction, and cashflow</td></tr></tbody></table>

Hover over any data point for a tooltip showing the exact dollar value at that year.

A time horizon dropdown in the top-right corner adjusts all five charts — **5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 years**.

## Limitations

* **Maximum comparison slots:** You can compare up to **3 strategies** at once (1 current + 2 selected).
* **Read-only:** The comparison view is for visual analysis only — you cannot edit strategies from within it.
* **No export:** The comparison is on-screen only. To share results, take a screenshot or export each strategy's cashflows individually via the Excel download.

<details>

<summary>Can I compare strategies from different clients?</summary>

Yes. The comparison selector searches across all your clients. You can pick any strategy from any client to compare against the current one.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why is a comparison chart empty for one strategy?</summary>

If a strategy has no properties or no simulation data yet, its line will not appear on the chart. Add at least one property and ensure the simulation has run before comparing.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I export the comparison?</summary>

The comparison view is currently on-screen only. To share the results, take a screenshot or use the individual strategy export (Excel download) for each strategy separately.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.scaleconnect.com.au/scaleconnect-docs/simulator/clone-and-compare.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
